Calling all storytellers and story lovers! Retreat Farm and Vermont Public are pleased to present Being American, a live storytelling event on Wednesday, March 11, directed by Transom Story Lab, as part of Retreat Farm’s America at 250 series. Transom Story Lab is a nonprofit organization nationally recognized for training journalists and community members in the art of first-person storytelling for radio, podcasts, and live audiences. For more than 25 years, Transom has helped people transform lived experience into thoughtful, human stories that foster empathy and connection.

In the days leading up to the performance, selected storytellers will participate in an intensive workshop March 7–9, led by seasoned trainers—including the Director of The Moth—and supported by Transom’s senior teaching team.

On March 11, in an event hosted by historian Jill Lepore, storytellers will share short, personal stories reflecting on what it means to be American today. Through everyday experiences, these true stories will explore themes of identity, belonging, responsibility, and hope.

Anyone interested in being a storyteller can learn more and apply through Retreat Farm’s website by March 1. Storytellers do not need to be professional writers or performers. This event is designed for individuals whose voices and experiences are not always heard on stage. Selected participants will receive supportive coaching and will share a 5–7 minute true story in a welcoming, community-centered live event.
